National Honor Society

National Honor Society & National Junior Honor Society

At NC Cyber Academy, we believe academic excellence should be recognized and celebrated. The National Honor Society (NHS) and National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) honor students who exemplify the four pillars of the organization: scholarship, leadership, service, and character.

Membership is more than an academic achievement; it's a reflection of a student's integrity, work ethic, and commitment to making a positive impact. NHS and NJHS members represent NC Cyber Academy through meaningful service to their communities across North Carolina, taking on leadership roles and modeling the values we strive to instill in every student.

For qualifying students, membership offers opportunities to grow as leaders, build a record of service, and stand out academically both in high school and beyond, including college applications and scholarship opportunities.

History

The National Honor Society was officially established in 1921 by the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP). While local and regional honor societies had existed for years prior, none had united into a single national organization until NHS filled that gap.

Under the leadership of Dr. Edward Rynearson, principal of Fifth Avenue High School in Pittsburgh, the organization began with a single chapter, the Alpha Chapter, at his own school. What started as one chapter grew rapidly, expanding to more than 1,000 chapters nationwide by 1930.

With a formal constitution, an official emblem and motto, and a dedicated network of principals serving as chapter coordinators, NHS quickly distinguished itself, becoming one of the nation's leading educational organizations a legacy that continues in schools like NC Cyber Academy today.

Why Join?

Membership in the National Honor Society is more than a line on a college application, though it certainly strengthens one. NHS and NJHS membership signals to colleges and universities that a student has demonstrated excellence in scholarship, leadership, service, and character, setting them apart in an increasingly competitive admissions landscape.

Beyond the recognition, NHS membership comes with real, practical benefits. Members gain access to exclusive webinars designed to demystify the college admissions process, while offering insider guidance on everything from building a standout application to understanding what admissions officers are truly looking for. It's an opportunity not just to be recognized for past achievement, but to be better prepared for what comes next.

For students at NC Cyber Academy, joining NHS and NJHS is a chance to build leadership experience, deepen community involvement, and gain a genuine head start on their path to college and beyond.
