McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance
Every child deserves the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive regardless of where they lay their head at night. Enacted by Congress in January 2002, the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act guarantees that children and youth experiencing homelessness have the right to a free, appropriate public education, and requires schools to remove barriers that could stand in the way of their enrollment, attendance, and success.
At NC Cyber Academy, we are committed to upholding this promise. We work to ensure that every eligible student has equal access to the support, stability, and opportunities they need to succeed academically no matter their housing situation.
The McKinney-Vento Program meets the needs of homeless students attending North Carolina Cyber Academy by addressing academic challenges and family issues affecting their success in school. Example living situations that may qualify include, but are not limited to:
- Living with a friend, relative or other person/family because of a loss of housing
- Living in an emergency shelter, transitional housing or domestic violence shelter
- Living temporarily in substandard housing
- Living in a runaway or homeless youth shelter
- Staying in a motel or hotel because of a loss of housing or fleeing domestic violence
- Living in a car, park or public place, abandoned building or bus station
- Living in a campground or an inadequate trailer home
- Youth living on their own, even if their families want them to come home
