Specific programs offered in North Carolina Cyber Academy’s CTE Department include Adobe Visual, Coding in Minecraft, Food and Nutrition, Child Development, Animal Science, and Microsoft Office. We offer certification for Veterinarian Technician in our Animal Science program In addition, we teach Microsoft Office, including Excel and Microsoft Word, and provide students the opportunity to receive Microsoft Office Specialist certification in high school.

North Carolina Cyber Academy’s Adobe Visual I class offers Photoshop Illustrator, while our Adobe Visual II includes InDesign. Each of those offer the opportunity to take an industry-certified certification test that is provided free to charge to students on behalf of North Carolina Cyber Academy.

Through North Carolina Cyber Academy’s Coding in Minecraft course, students learn rudimentary skills related to computer science and computer programming. Our Coding and Minecraft course will fulfill the computer science course requirement that is now necessary to achieve high school graduation.

The North Carolina Cyber Academy was recognized in the fall of 2025 by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction for having the largest Career and Technical Education (CTE) Program in the State of North Carolina for Charter schools.

As of the fall of 2025, North Carolina Cyber Academy enrolled approximately 1,250 enrollments in CTE. The next biggest program - the Triangle Math and Science Academy, which has been established for many more years than NC Cyber - has approximately 1,100 students enrolled in its CTE offerings.

NCDPI officials agreed that the North Carolina Cyber Academy High School is now competing with regular local education agency (LEA) CTE programs in regards to size, credentials earned, pathways offered, etc. 

In North Carolina Cyber Academy’s Food and Nutrition I and Food and Nutrition II courses, students cook at home utilizing instruction from our North Carolina Cyber Academy’s teachers within our online platform. Students have the freedom to try different dishes based on their interests and cultural backgrounds.

The North Carolina Cyber Academy utilizes technology in the form of computer-derived simulated babies. These simulated babies render readings that determine if anything happened to them in the form of abuse or neglect. In Child Development, students learn about birthing, early human development, caring brains, and toxic stress, among other relevant topics.

The North Carolina Cyber Academy offers courses in Animal Science, as well as Horticulture I and Horticulture II and Veterinary Science courses. Students interested in pursuing veterinary medicine as a profession can receive Veterinary Technician certification while in high school.

North Carolina Cyber Academy provides courses in Microsoft Office, which includes Excel (spreadsheets for bookkeeping and record keeping) and Microsoft Word (word processor). Students who pass all five of North Carolina Cyber Academy’s Microsoft Office certifications are eligible to receive Microsoft Office Specialist certification. In 2024, over 90 percent of NC Cyber’s students in Microsoft Office earned the Microsoft Office Specialist certification.

Yes. Students who successfully pass the North Carolina Cyber Academy’s Microsoft Excel course receive a math credit that can go towards standard graduation requirements.

At North Carolina Cyber Academy Elementary School, teachers log students' attendance based on their live attendance in class. Elementary students are expected to attend live lessons daily in the morning and afternoon Monday through Thursday.

At North Carolina Cyber Academy Elementary School, teachers mark students' attendance daily. Parents/guardians do not mark attendance.

At North Carolina Cyber Academy Elementary School, teachers will take attendance in the virtual classroom, so parents are not required to log their child's attendance. However, if your child is absent, you must complete an absence form to request that the absence be excused. This process ensures we keep accurate records in PowerSchool and properly document all absences.

At North Carolina Cyber Academy Elementary School, we believe it's important to build positive learning routines. Daily attendance and participation in live online learning is vital as students develop academic routines.

There is not a maximum number of hours students are required to be logged in for. Students are encouraged to work outside of the regular school day and on weekends to take advantage of the flexibility offered by North Carolina Cyber Academy Elementary School. 

At North Carolina Cyber Academy Elementary School, teachers will take attendance in the virtual classroom, so parents are not required to log their child's attendance. At North Carolina Cyber Academy Elementary School, parents and guardians can submit the Excused Absence form, a link to which is included in weekly newsletters, anytime a student is absent but should be marked excused. Students should also notify teachers before or after their absence to ensure all course work is made up.

At North Carolina Cyber Academy Elementary School, teachers will take attendance in the online classroom, so parents are not required to log their child's attendance. At North Carolina Cyber Academy Elementary School, live classes run Monday - Thursday from 8:30 am - 3:30 pm, with 8 sessions of 45 minutes. During that time, students can expect to be in class for at least 4 out of 8 sessions each day with some days of the week requiring students to be in class for more sessions depending on the specific student's schedule. Fridays are asynchronous for all students. Students are expected to log into schools and complete an asynchronous assignment for each class on Fridays. 

At North Carolina Cyber Academy Elementary School, we have two attendance tiers- Traditional and Full Flex. Attendance tiers are assigned by subject area based on student performance in that subject. Students who are assigned a Traditional Attendance tier are required to attend that subject class live for attendance. Students who are assigned a Full Flex attendance tier are encouraged to attend that subject class live, but are not required to attend for attendance.

At the North Carolina Cyber Academy Elementary School, all students have an 8:45 morning meeting, and then their first core online live class starts at 9:00AM.  After the morning class, teachers schedule daily small group virtual lessons; when students are not scheduled for small group, they can work asynchronously on assignments.

After a period for lunch and recess, there is an afternoon live online class that starts at 1:00 with small group virtual lessons also in the afternoon.   All students have ELA and Math daily, 5th grade students also have science daily. Science, Social Studies, Health and PE are also live online classes that meet once a week.

At North Carolina Cyber Elementary School, a block of time is scheduled for lunch and recess each day.  

At the North Carolina Cyber Academy Elementary School, the afternoon core class ends at 2:00 p.m. (3:00 for some 5th graders), the last afternoon live virtual small group ends at 3:30 p.m..

Our student schedules at the North Carolina Cyber Academy Elementary School are designed to offer both structure and flexibility to support your child's learning. Core classes, such as math, science, language arts, and social studies, are held every day to ensure consistent instruction. In addition, students have their electives and small group sessions scheduled twice a week, which provide opportunities for more personalized learning and exploration of interests.

Students at North Carolina Cyber Academy Elementary School have a structured routine for accessing their daily assignments on Canvas. When Students sign into Canvas they will see weekly modules that help keep everything organized and make it easier for them to find what they need each day.

Excuse Previous Assignments: Teachers will go into the system to excuse any assignments that the student missed prior to their enrollment, ensuring that the student is not penalized for content they were unable to complete.

Provide Supplemental Materials: To help the student catch up, teachers may provide handouts, study guides, or other resources from the period that was missed.

Pencils, Pens, Colored pencils, Highlighters, Pencil sharpeners, Erasers. Notebooks or Lined Paper: These are essential for note-taking and organizing their work, helping students keep track of important information and assignments.

North Carolina Cyber Academy Elementary School computers have a calculator on them the students can use in a popup window during class and testing. For many students this is sufficient. However, if your student is distracted by popup windows, consider getting them a handheld Middle School Calculator. Their teacher can verify which types are allowed during state testing. 

Having these materials will support students in completing their assignments effectively and staying organized throughout their virtual learning experience.

While younger students may benefit from working in a shared family area, older students may need a more separate, quiet space to fully focus on their schoolwork. At the North Carolina Cyber Elementary School, students take the lead in most clubs, organizing and running meetings, which typically last about 30 minutes. Some clubs meet weekly, while others meet once or twice a month. A teacher or counselor is always present to provide support and guidance during meetings.

At North Carolina Cyber Academy Elementary School, students take the lead in organizing and running most clubs. If a student leader wishes to arrange an in-person club meeting, they can work with a teacher or counselor to organize it as a club-specific field trip, following the school’s field trip guidelines. This provides students with the opportunity to meet face-to-face, further enhancing their club experience and building connections with their peers.

This option gives students a chance to take initiative while fostering a sense of community through shared activities.

Field trips at North Carolina Cyber Academy Elementary are held across the state most months of the year, providing students with valuable opportunities to explore new environments, engage with their peers, and enhance their learning experiences outside the classroom. These trips often include educational visits to museums, cultural sites, and various attractions, allowing students to connect their studies with real-world experiences. 

In addition to regular field trips, the North Carolina Cyber Academy Elementary School also hosts field or park days. Field trips offer students an excellent opportunity to socialize, build friendships, and enjoy a break from their regular academic schedule while staying active and engaged.

Our in-person field trips and events at North Carolina Cyber Academy Elementary School are not mandatory. However, we encourage all students to attend. These activities provide valuable opportunities for social interaction and engagement outside of the virtual classroom.

The only mandatory in-person activity for students is the end-of-grade testing sessions held in May. This ensures that all students have the opportunity to demonstrate their learning and progress throughout the year.

Field trips at the North Carolina Cyber Academy Elementary School are designed to be low to no cost, ensuring that all students can participate without financial burden. Families are responsible for providing their own transportation to and from the trip locations.

Additionally, families stay and participate in the events with their students, enhancing the experience and fostering a sense of community. At the North Carolina Cyber Academy Elementary School, parents or a designated adult are responsible for providing transportation to and from field trips. Additionally, the parent or designated adult is expected to stay and participate in the field trip, engaging with the students and supporting their learning experience. At the North Carolina Cyber Academy Elementary School, there is a short break between classes that allows students to stretch, get a drink, and use the restroom. Depending on their class schedule, students may also have a longer break or designated Owl Time (study hall), where they can relax and recharge.

Students who reside in North Carolina are eligible for admission at the North Carolina Cyber Academy. If you do not live in North Carolina but are moving here in the near future, your student will be eligible once you establish residency. The North Carolina Cyber Academy is a full-time program and students may not be concurrently enrolled in another public school. The North Carolina Cyber Academy enrolls school-age students, as defined by the NC Department of Public Instruction. This includes students from the age of 5 through 21. To enroll in kindergarten, children must meet the age requirements of their resident school district. Information on maximum age requirements can be found in the North Carolina Cyber Academy Student Handbook.

A list of documents needed for enrollment at the North Carolina Cyber Academy can be found under 'About NCCA', then chick the 'Enrollment' tab. Families of high school students will also need their student's most current official school transcript showing credits earned in high school.

Most students start at the beginning of a semester (either August or mid-January). The North Carolina Cyber Academy allows late enrollments for a limited time during each semester. After the enrollment period for a semester ends, a student’s enrollment will be held to the following semester Reminder: all students must stay enrolled at their current school until the caretaker has received an official enrollment date from the North Carolina Cyber Academy, which will be sent after all paperwork has been submitted and approved. If a student is withdrawn from their current school before being officially enrolled at NC Cyber, they could be considered truant in North Carolina.

Yes. As a public charter school, the North Carolina Cyber Academy must meet the same special education requirements as traditional public schools. The NC Cyber Academy Special Education department will work with students to meet the requirements of their applicable plan.

North Carolina does not have an opt out policy for state testing. State Board policy ACCT-021 requires all students enrolled in a school to participate in the state assessment program. Failure to participate in state testing may result in a student being administratively withdrawn from the North Carolina Cyber Academy.

Failure to participate in these assessments may also negatively impact the future of NC Cyber as a school of choice for students in North Carolina. The North Carolina Cyber Academy has a specific testing rate that we must meet in order to avoid punitive action by the State. Parents and students need to understand how important testing is for our future operation as a charter school.

At the North Carolina Cyber Academy, some required tests, such as benchmark testing, some high school exams, and other general assessments are taken at home by students as part of their general course curriculum. The state required tests listed in the student handbook must be taken in-person and there is no option to take them online.

The North Carolina Cyber Academy School Calendar is published in the Student Handbook and available on the myNCCA.com website showing testing date windows. Specific testing days, times, and locations will be provided closer to the test dates. The dates for state testing are set by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction and there are no options for makeup testing outside of the testing window.

The North Carolina Cyber Academy is required to offer one testing site in each of the 8 NC School Board Education Districts across the state. NC Cyber generally utilizes 12 sites in an attempt to provide families with more options for testing locations. These sites are dependent on student population concentrations and are generally in major cities. Parents will be given the opportunity to choose which testing site their student will attend. While the school tries to limit the distance a family is required to travel to under 60 miles, families may have to travel further depending on their location.

Caretakers are responsible for providing transportation for all required face-to-face testing at the North Carolina Cyber Academy. The testing calendar is published at the beginning of the school year to allow time for caretakers to make arrangements for their students to have transportation to testing. If someone other than the caretaker will be bringing the student to testing, the caretaker should provide written documentation to the site administrator.

Failure to participate in State Testing may result in a student being administratively withdrawn from the North Carolina Cyber Academy. The required state assessments are part of regular participation in academic courses for students.

North Carolina state law details that North Carolina Cyber Academy may withdraw students that fail to regularly participate in courses. The North Carolina Cyber Academy takes these assessments, and the valuable information they provide, very seriously, and expect students/families to do so as well. Families should schedule personal activities outside of the state required testing dates.

The North Carolina Cyber Academy is a 1-1 technology initiative school providing each student a laptop to use while attending NC Cyber or students may choose to use their own personal computer. Each family will need to secure their own Internet service provider. In certain cases, based on financial need or other circumstances, NC Cyber Academy may provide a stipend to offset the cost of the Internet service. This determination will take place during the enrollment process.

Students at the North Carolina Cyber Academy can click on the "Help" icon in the lower left of their navigation bar when logged in to Canvas.

Then click on "Ask your instructor a question" if it is a question best addressed by the students teacher, or "Report a problem" if it is a technological issue that is best addressed by our technology support team.

Your North Carolina Cyber Academy student should start by contacting their course teacher who can help determine if their question is about the course material or if there is a technical issue that can be sent to the student help desk.

The North Carolina Cyber Academy recommends all prospective families visit our enrollment website (linked below) to get details about our enrollment process, including the required documentation. Families must submit proof of North Carolina residency, a birth certificate, immunization records, and additional paperwork to enroll their children into the North Carolina Cyber Academy.

For prospective students enrolling in Grades K through 8, a most recent full report card is required. For High School students (Grades 9-12), a complete official transcript detailing earned and potential credits, final course grades, and GPA points awarded for each course is required.

In North Carolina, all public schools use the same North Carolina Standard Course of Study (NCSCOS), which is determined by the State Board of Education. These standards are the knowledge and skills students should understand by the end of each grade/course.

The North Carolina Cyber Academy shares the progress of students in a variety of ways. Parents/Guardians and Learning Coaches should also access their Canvas Observer Accounts in order to view teacher notifications and monitor their student's instructional tasks and daily progress in each course. The PowerSchool Parent

Portal will also provide them with their student’s final course grades, attendance, test scores, and student schedules. Staff and families will utilize ParentSquare to communicate about student progress.

NCCA Title I Parent and Family Engagement Policy provides additional information about effective communication and monitoring your students:

1. Teachers will communicate with parents any time during the school year once a student is failing a course or has had a significant negative change in their behavior or performance. Parents can request a teacher conference as needed throughout the school year. Teachers make themselves available for parent conferences weekly by request. Parents can request a teacher conference as needed throughout the school year.

2. Frequent and current student progress is reported in Canvas and is available for parents to review and discuss daily. Teachers will provide feedback on student work and ensure that grades are posted in Canvas in a timely manner. Progress reports will be issued to parents during the midpoint of every quarter. Parents have access to monitor progress within the Canvas platform.

3. Parent-teacher conferences:

• K-8: Conferences will be scheduled for all students at the end of the 1st quarter. Students who are at risk of grade level retention, failing courses, or have had significant negative changes in their behavior or performance will have a required conference scheduled during quarters 2, 3, and 4.

• 9-12: High School reserves a day each quarter for formal parent-teacher conferences. This full day is scheduled within one (1) week after the distribution of student interim reports. This allows parents an opportunity to review the most accurate and current grades, and then schedule a conference with a particular teacher based on the content of the interim reports.

Parents/Guardians should also be aware of the following measures of student progress:

State Assessments: Individual Student Reports for end-of-grade/course tests and other state assessments (English language proficiency assessment) are accessible in the parent portal of the NC-SIS (PowerSchool)

All NC students take end-of-grade assessments for reading and math in grades 3-8. Students take end-of-grade science assessments in grades 5 and 8. High school students take end-of-course assessments in English II, Biology, NC Math 1, and NC Math 3.

Students in Grade 10 take the Pre-ACT. Students in grade 11 take the ACT. Students who are CTE Concentrators in Grade 12 take ACT WorkKeys. Those results are shared by ACT.

District Assessments: Throughout the school year, students will be assessed on their mastery of course content with various benchmark, formative, and summative assessments. Assessment results are analyzed by staff to support data-driven instructional decisions for student success. Students are required to participate in all benchmark and course assessments to provide a complete academic picture of their progress toward content mastery.

Assessments help the North Carolina Cyber Academy identify student strengths and weaknesses to better individualize educational plans and supports. These tools also assist NC Cyber staff in determining a student’s level of academic mastery and may play a role in course placement decisions and eligibility for certain programs such as the academically/intellectually gifted program (AIG).

Universal screeners are a type of academic or behavioral/social-emotional skill assessment that is administered to students 2-3x/year to assist in determining a student’s level of academic mastery as well as the need for additional supplemental services. Universal screeners are taken online by students and are mandatory. A student’s special circumstances may necessitate participating in additional assessments that may be required for multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS), to participate in the AIG program, and/or as may be required based on a student’s IEP.

An Individual Reading Plan (IRP) shall be developed for any student in kindergarten through third grade demonstrating difficulty with reading. An IRP will have specific strategies/ideas that can be done at home.

North Carolina’s Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) selected mCLASS DIBELS ® 8th Edition as the state’s K-3 Literacy Assessment. mCLASS is an integrated literacy system based on the Science of Reading. mCLASS has been revised and upgraded from the assessment NC districts have used in the past, based on the latest research and the Science of Reading. It is a valid and reliable assessment, supporting universal literacy screening, and progress monitoring.

Parents/Guardians may review a North Carolina Cyber Academy teacher’s licensure status through the NC Public Schools licensure site.

Please note this site does not provide personal information about teachers. Parents/guardians are encouraged to contact their student’s principal if they have additional questions about teacher qualifications. Substitute teachers (either short or long-term) may or may not hold an NC teaching license.

A staff qualifications letter is a federal requirement for Title I Schools and is shared with families at the beginning of the school year. This letter includes the following:

● Whether the teacher has met the state qualifications for the grade levels and subject areas in which the teacher provides instruction;

● Whether the teacher is teaching under an emergency or other provisional status through which the state qualifications have been waived;

● What baccalaureate degrees have been earned by the teacher, along with the field of study and any other certifications;

● Whether your child is provided services by paraprofessionals and, if so, their qualifications; and

● Whether your child has received four weeks or more of instruction by a non-highly qualified teacher.

Each North Carolina Cyber Academy student is required to have a Learning Coach. The Learning Coach is an important member of the student's educational team. A Learning Coach is most often a parent, but could also be any reliable adult who is responsible for monitoring their student's progress and assisting them in meeting school requirements. Within our virtual setting, our Learning Coaches must be heavily involved with the student's daily instructional plan, much more so than often found in a traditional brick-and-mortar school.

The NC Cyber Learning Coach should be comfortable with technology & the various instructional platforms we utilize. They must also be aware of our policies, be readily available to assist their student, and communicate with teachers regularly about their student's progress. We understand that this is a heavy lift and want to be able to support you in your role as the Learning Coach.

Second Step Curriculum: Supporting the whole child is a priority, and our goal is to provide students with social and emotional learning (SEL). North Carolina Cyber Academy Student Support Team: Parents are encouraged to partner with our Student Support Team to support academic achievement, develop interpersonal skills, strengthen mental wellness, and explore career activities after graduation. School counseling, psychological services, and social work staff encourage students to learn skills in emotional regulation to support healthy decision-making skills and emotional development.

Community Service Graduation Requirement: An additional North Carolina Cyber Academy requirement for high school graduation is a minimum of 100 hours of community service or 25 hours for each year enrolled in the high school at NC Cyber for students enrolling after their freshman year. Students will receive a notation on their high school transcript conveying the fulfillment of this requirement. This requirement supports the cultivation of civic literacy, increases knowledge of how to actively participate and initiate change in one’s community, and supports the cultivation of 21st-century skills such as communication, collaboration, productivity and accountability, and leadership and responsibility.

Effective communication between families and schools is essential at the North Carolina Cyber Academy in ensuring that your student receives a quality learning experience and is provided with the opportunities to reach optimal success.

Most importantly, parents/guardians should always ensure that the school has the most current contact information in the student information system. This will allow teachers and the school to easily contact parents/guardians for general communication and in case of emergency.

Academically and/or Intellectually Gifted (AIG): In NC, school districts must identify and

Credit by Demonstrated Mastery: In compliance with North Carolina Board of Education policy, the North Carolina Cyber Academy allows students the opportunity to earn credit in a particular course without requiring the student to complete course instruction. This opportunity is open to all NC Cyber students in grades 9-12 for high school courses and in grades 6-8 for high school courses offered in middle school. Career and College Promise (CCP)/Dual Enrollment: Career & College Promise (CCP) is North Carolina’s dual enrollment program for high school students. This program allows eligible North Carolina high school students to enroll in college classes at North Carolina community colleges and universities through their high school. Tuition is free for families. Students who successfully complete college courses earn college credits they can take with them after graduation. In many cases, students can also earn dual credit — meeting high school graduation requirements with college courses. Students who wish to take advantage of this opportunity must retain “full-time” status at North Carolina Cyber Academy, which is defined as two (2) or more courses per semester enrolled at NC Cyber. Violations of these policies may be grounds for dismissal from the program. Enrollment in external programs such as CCP and/or NCVPS is at the discretion of the principal.

High School Courses Taken in Middle School: North Carolina Cyber Academy students may earn high school credit for high school-level courses taken during the middle school years. A middle school course for which high school credit is granted must cover the same content as the equivalent high school course and must be approved by the school counselor and administration in advance. End-of-course exams, if applicable, are required just as they would be if the course was taken in high school. Grades received by middle school students taking high school courses for credit are not factored into the high school GPA but will appear on the student’s high school transcript. These courses can be found in the middle school course catalog.

Honors Level Courses: North Carolina Cyber Academy high school students have access to a variety of honors-level courses. Honors-level courses typically have a faster pace than standard-level courses. They offer additional rigor, complexity, and creativity than standard-level courses. Advanced Placement (AP) Courses: The Advanced Placement (AP) Program, through College Board, offers students the opportunity to engage in rigorous college-level coursework in a high school setting. AP courses are designed for highly motivated and prepared students who seek academic rigor and college credit based on the yearly Advanced Placement Exams. Several AP courses satisfy graduation requirements for NC students as outlined in State Board policy. Colleges and universities may likely offer college credit for these courses if your child scores a 3 or above on the exam. All of the colleges in the UNC System award college credit.

All Advanced Placement courses are equal to one high school credit and are full-year-long courses. AP Examinations are conducted in May of each academic year. Advanced Placement courses also carry an additional 1-point GPA weight. High School students enrolled in AP courses are expected to take the AP test. AP exams are free for NC public high school students enrolled in these courses. If a student registers for an exam late, there will be a fee. Failure to take the AP test may result in the enrolled course being lowered to an “Honors” weight. NCVPS North Carolina Virtual Public School (NCVPS): NCVPS is NC’s state supplemental program and leader in online education, providing inclusive learning opportunities for students across the state. Founded in 2007, with a strong commitment to ensuring quality education for all students, regardless of location, NCVPS has over 16 years of experience serving diverse learners.

Students should consider this when thinking about taking advanced courses:

• Ability – How do you work independently?

• Study Habits – How diligently are you willing to work to be successful?

Work Ethic – How will you manage the increased homework (1-2 hours per night per AP Course)?

• Interest– How interested are you in the curriculum?

• Extra-Curricular Commitments – How busy are you outside of school?

• Post-Secondary Goals – How do you plan on meeting your after high school goals? If a four-year university is a consideration, you may be more qualified if you take AP courses.

Governor’s School: Each summer, NC Governor’s School offers a unique opportunity for high-achieving rising juniors and seniors to learn with their peers from across the state in a 4-week residential program at two college campus sites.

Summer Ventures in Science and Mathematics: Summer Ventures is a no-cost, state-funded program for academically talented North Carolina students who aspire to careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. North Carolina Cyber Academy students presently in the 10th or 11th grade in high school whose custodial parents or guardians established legal residency in North Carolina no later than December 1 of the current year can apply to this program. These students must have high academic ability and motivation and have a keen interest in science and mathematics. The program is not designed to provide incentive for students whose academic performance reflects a lack of self-motivation or discipline. Consideration is given to students whose abilities are not accurately reflected in grades and standardized test scores, such as those for whom English is a second language and those who have exceptionalities. Applications are completed online through CFNC.org beginning in October (students must know their CFNC ID). Students should see their counselor for more information.

• Summer Ventures

North Carolina Cyber Academy is a virtual public charter school. Charter schools are public schools of choice that are authorized by the State Board of Education and operated by independent non-profit boards of directors. State and local tax dollars are the primary funding sources for charter schools, which have open enrollment and cannot discriminate in admissions, associate with any religion or religious group, or charge tuition. Charter schools operate with freedom from many of the regulations that govern district schools, but charter schools are held accountable through the State assessment and accountability system.

Since NCCA is a school of choice, families have the choice to enroll their student(s) in their local public school or district, a registered home school, or a private school.

In compliance with the Exceptional Children Division of North Carolina Department of Public Instruction’s Project Child Find, NC Cyber Academy actively seeks to locate and identify children and youth agesbirth through 21 with disabilities who require special education and related services. This includes children and youth who have been diagnosed or are suspected to have intellectual, physical, or emotional disabilities and are unable to benefit from a regular school program without special assistance.

The North Carolina Cyber Academy has three grade bands, which include an elementary, middle, and high school. Each grade band has individual websites that provide staff contact information. Staff contact information can also be found on our NCCA website.

In accordance with Session Law 2020-7 North Carolina Cyber Academy has adopted and implemented a school-based mental health plan. NC Cyber’s REACH Team (Recognize warning signs, Engage with empathy, Ask and assist those at risk, Cultivate resilience and communicate hope, and Help students access care) is composed of school counselors, school social workers, and school psychologists. In addition to the REACH team, NC Cyber provides annual training to staff that is focused on the mental health needs of children and adolescents. Staff are also provided with information regarding suicide prevention, with the goal of recognizing the warning signs of suicide and how to seek help for students.

Yes! Many of our students have received full and partial athletic scholarships in sports ranging from gymnastics to tennis to softball. Students playing team sports can play for their local high school teams and attend North Carolina Cyber Academy if approved by their local school system.

The process for NC Cyber Academy to become approved by the NCAA includes meeting the academic standards set by the NCAA for core high school courses. NC Cyber’s credit-bearing courses have been recognized as meeting NCAA enrollment and eligibility requirements. Students at NC Cyber are taking courses that have been approved by the NCAA at the Division I, II, and III levels.

NCAA approval includes the following components, which the North Carolina Cyber Academy has achieved:

—-Submittal of curriculum and course information to the NCAA Eligibility Center, with assurances that all approved courses align with the NCAA’s academic standards for student-athletes.

—-Continued compliance with NCAA’s requirements for course rigor and content, along with appropriate support for student-athletes within an online environment.

—-Submittal of all final course certifications and transcripts that confirm graduation from North Carolina Cyber Academy, along with completion of all NCAA-approved courses.

Student-athletes should register with the NCAA Clearinghouse through their advisors and/or parents. The North Carolina Cyber Academy - while fully approved by the NCAA - does not complete the NCAA Clearinghouse process for student-athletes.

The North Carolina Cyber Academy virtual learning model allows student-athletes to:

• Complete coursework on their own schedule to accommodate training sessions, tournaments, and competitions. Our 'full flex' program allows high-achieving students who can remain on top of their studies at a sufficient level to have complete flexibility in regards to classes and coursework.

• Attend live online classes or watch recorded lessons when their schedule demands more flexibility.

While North Carolina Cyber Academy offers highly-competitive esports that compete on a statewide level, we do not currently have athletic teams that compete against other schools in traditional sports. However, student-athletes and their families can receive permission from their local counties and/or local education agencies (LEAs) to attend North Carolina Cyber Academy and still compete in traditional sports at schools within their local districts.

Whether you’re traveling for a gymnastics meet, tennis tournament, baseball, softball, or basketball tournament, or dance competition, you won’t fall behind in school!

Over the years, scores of NC Cyber students have received scholarships for various sports, including tennis, volleyball, gymnastics, baseball, softball, and others! We have had students move on to major Division I colleges, as well as Division II, Division II, and NAIA institutions. We have also had student-athletes compete professionally in sports such as soccer.
