Is Online Learning Right for my Student

Is Online Learning Right for My Student?
Choosing an educational path is one of the most important decisions a family makes, and online learning isn't the right fit for every student. It works best for students and families who are prepared for a different kind of structure, independence, and commitment than a traditional classroom.
Use the checklist below to help you honestly evaluate whether online learning aligns with your student's needs and your family's ability to support them, particularly for students in middle and high school.
Student Readiness
- My student is self-motivated and able to complete work and study independently, without daily supervision from a teacher.
- My student has the academic readiness, including basic reading, writing, math, and computer literacy skills, to succeed in an online environment.
- My student understands that online courses often require more time and focus than face-to-face classes, not less.
- My student is willing and able to communicate regularly with teachers, attend required check-ins, and ask for help when needed.
Family Support & Involvement
- My student will have the daily support of a Learning Coach to encourage them and monitor academic progress.
- Our family has the time to devote to the six (6) hours per day required to meet North Carolina attendance requirements.
- Our family can create and consistently follow a schedule that keeps our student on track, with a plan to catch up if they fall behind.
Practical Readiness
- Our family has consistent access to high-speed internet, which is required for daily lessons and coursework.
- Our family understands that coursework must be completed on time, and that incomplete work can affect academic progress and may jeopardize continued enrollment at NC Cyber Academy.
